Bayelsa State Elders Council, Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) Worldwide, has expressed concern over the Wednesday invasion and killings of three persons at Opu-Nembe kingdom of Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
Recall that DAILY POST reported yesterday that about three persons were on Wednesday killed in a supremacy battle between two groups in Opu-Nembe in Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
An aide to the Youth President of Opu Nembe, Ayarite Moses and his girlfriend were reportedly shot dead by the unidentified gunmen who invaded the community while another person was also killed by the invader.
A statement, sent to DAILY POST through the Chairman, Bayelsa Elders Council, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah (Rtd), said, “It is with utmost concern, dismay and sadness that the Bayelsa State Elders Council, wish to condemn in totality, the recent politically-motivated killings in Nembe Local Government Area.
“The Council has also observed with disappointment that the Peace Accord that was signed in the recent past by various political groups in Nembe to engender sustained peace, appears to be totally ignored. The key political players and actors seem not to have dropped their old habits as they are still bent on continuing in their violent and destructive ways and tendencies to entrench themselves in power at all cost”
”The Council, therefore, respectively call on the state government and the security agencies to fish out the criminal elements involved in this dastardly act and be made to face the full weight of the law.
The IYC said the killing is condemnable and shocking despite the signing a peace accord by key actors in the community.
It said in a statement issued on Saturday to DAILY POST by its National Spokesperson, Ebilade Ekerefe, that it regretted the killing and commiserates with the Opu Nembe people and the families who lost loved ones during the unfortunate Wednesday violent attack.
It said, “This is an act of barbarism that should be condemned by every progressive thinking mind as incidences of this nature has the capacity to distort the development trajectory of a people.”
“We appeal to the youths of Opu Nembe to resist the temptation of carrying out reprisal attacks while we call on relevant security agencies to work with the community stakeholders to gather credible intelligence and bring perpetrators of this dastardly act to justice.”
“We caution political actors to desist from hitting up the calm political temperature that has been made possible in the state as a result of Governor Douye Diri’s disposition to peace and consensus building especially now that we are going into another round of elections”.
