Gerben Karstens died on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at the age of 80, his family confirms to ABCNews. The former cyclist won, among other things, fourteen stages in the Tour of Spain.

Karstens, born in Leiden, was a professional cyclist between 1965 and 1980. As an amateur he was already good for a gold medal at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo in the 100 kilometer team time trial.

Karstens, who was known for his humor in the peloton, was also good for six stage victories in the Tour de France in addition to his stage victories in the Vuelta. He also won a stage in the Giro d’Italia.

This makes him one of five Dutchmen to have won stages in all three Grand Tours. That list also includes Jeroen Blijlevens, Erik Breukink, Jean-Paul van Poppel and Tom Dumoulin.

Karstens never became Dutch champion on the road. His highest ranking during an NK was in 1971 in Valkenburg. Then he was third behind winner Joop Zoetemelk and Wim Prinsen who finished second.

Karstens had a stroke a few weeks ago and died on Saturday, October 8, 2022 in Dongen, North Brabant.

Gerben Karstens Biography

After the Olympic Games, Karstens started a successful professional career, where he won six stages in the Tour de France, 14 stages in the Vuelta a España, 1 stage in the Giro d’Italia, and other races such as Paris–Tours and GP Fourmies. He became Dutch national road race champion in 1966.

In the 1974 Tour de France, Karstens finished second in the fourth stage. Afterwards, he forgot to take the doping tests. The tour organisation set him back to the last place of the stage results, and gave him 10 minutes penalty time in the overall classification, which made him lose his third place.

One day later, the jury took the penalty time back. Thanks to 5 seconds of bonification that Karstens won during intermediate sprints, he took over the yellow jersey from Eddy Merckx. He wore yellow for one stage before losing it to Patrick Sercu after stage 6A, but he reclaimed the overall lead after stage 6B to spend another stage in Yellow before Merckx took over the lead for the remainder of the Tour.
