An American Idol season 19 finalist named Willie Spence was killed in a collision on Tuesday in Marion County, Tennessee.
According to sources, Spence was driving a Jeep Cherokee around 4 p.m. on Tuesday when, for an unknown reason, the car off the road and collided with a semi-tractor that was parked on the shoulder.
Spence, age 23, died in the collision.
The driver of the semi was unharmed.
Spence posted an Instagram video of himself singing along to the worship song “You Are My Hiding Place” in a car while he was in Nashville a few hours prior to the sad tragedy. Spence added two emojis to the caption—a microphone and the face with eyes welling with tears—and simply wrote, “Lord you are my hiding spot,” reports heavy.
Spence performed the whole song, which was composed in 1981 by Michael Ledner and is about having faith in God:
You are my hiding place
You always fill my heart with songs of deliverance
Whenever I am afraid,
I will trust in You,
I will trust in You;
Let the weak say I am strong in the strength of my Lord.
You are my hiding place
You always fill my heart with songs of deliverance
Whenever I am afraid
I will trust in You,
I will trust in You;
Let the weak say I am strong in the strength of the Lord.
Just a few votes behind the country singer Chayce Beckham on “American Idol” a year prior, Spence had been savoring his rising fame as a gospel performer. He debuted his first album in 2021, made an appearance on the “Idol” reunion program in May 2022, and played a number of shows across the United States with more scheduled for the United Kingdom.
