The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has appealed to students and youths in the country to show their anger through their votes on the days of elections, asking them to shun violent protests against the scarcity of new naira notes and fuel.
The student body charged Nigerian youths not to allow themselves to be used as tools by selfish politicians to disrupt the coming general elections.
The Ogun State chairman of NANS, Damilola Simeon, made the appeal at a press conference in Abeokuta, on Thursday.
Simeon appealed to the youths and Nigerians at large to be more patient with the Federal Government over the new naira policy and fuel scarcity.
He noted that both the federal and state governments were putting measures in place to put an end to the crisis.
According to him, it is expedient for students not to engage in any protest that would affect the growth and development of the country, saying that the security of lives and property of citizens should be a priority.
“The students’ constituency in Ogun jointly had recently signed a notification that we would be taking to the street to protest the activities of the Nigerian government ranging from the scarcity of the new naira notes and fuel.
“Within the last few days, we have been silent on the protest, not because we were intimidated or coerced. The fact remains that we have studied the situation and Gov. Dapo Abiodun has assured us that everything will soon return to normal,” he said.
Simeon who condemned the protest that resulted in the wanton destruction of banks and other facilities in Abeokuta on Tuesday called on Nigerian students and youths to remain calm, and resolute towards a peaceful environment during this electioneering period.
“We as peace-loving students should stand as one and as a nation for the peace and oneness of the country. We are ready to decide our faith. We are ready to secure a better Nigeria.
“Instead of fighting or engaging in violent protests, let us go out on the days of the election and show our displeasure with our PVC and our votes. Cast your vote for whomever you want. Vote, don’t fight. That is the way to develop this state and this nation,” he said.
